Artist Statement

In July of 2020, as the semester was drawing to an end, I began my residency at School of Visual Art in New York. Due to the pandemic, this was a unique opportunity to participate remotely, fully online.

At the beginning of the residency, there was much talk about how the covid crisis was impacting our lives and our practice. Since I live in Uruguay, South America, this was the first time I was engaged in a discussion about the pandemic. The conversation was rich and fascinating, as I listened to people from all of the world, share their experiences.

This residency was really an awakening to the fact that even though I live in a remote location, we all share the same feelings and problems associated with the pandemic. This realization pushed me to dig deeper into the subject of covid , the chaos, stress, uncertainty but also the joy and happiness. These topics, were a jumping off point to begin a series of work about the pandemic.

One realization I had was that we must live with the uncertainty of the unknown. We do not know, how long this pandemic will last, or what the outcomes will be. Will we be free to go to school or out in our community, or will we be quarantined indefinitely?

Based on these ideas I plan to continue producing art in the form of painting, installation and possibly performance.
